Prioritization Engine

Data Scientist and Analytics Engineer, Oil and Gas Operations

Prioritization EngineRemote (North American overlap preferred)Full-timePosted Nov 13, 2025, reviewed Aug 9, 2026

About the Role

This role builds the engine behind WellOPS. It ingests raw operational data (SCADA, production, tank levels, compressor data) and outputs a prioritized daily list that tells a field team which wells need attention, why, and in what order. The codebase and the domain guidance exist. What is needed is someone who speaks the language of field operations and can build the production-grade scoring, flag logic, and data transformations underneath it.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and build the production Python services that turn SCADA, production, completion, tank, compressor, and gas data into prioritized daily operational flags.
  • Develop scoring and prioritization logic that ranks wells by urgency across the full set of operational flag types.
  • Design new flags as customers ask for them, covering detection logic, data sources, business rules, and configurable thresholds.
  • Build per-customer configuration so the engine works across different well populations, thresholds, and production profiles.
  • Write the SQL and Python transformations that join diverse operational sources into canonical engine inputs.
  • Validate that the engine produces correct, explainable results that field team members trust.

Requirements

  • Oil and gas domain knowledge: well operations, production data, SCADA, completions, and tank gauging. If MCFD variance and stuffing box grease mean nothing to you, this is the wrong role.
  • Strong production Python. You write services and tests, not only notebooks.
  • Advanced SQL: complex queries, window functions, aggregations, CTEs.
  • Data modeling that turns messy operational data into clean analytical inputs.
  • Analytical judgment on threshold design, trend detection, variance analysis, and scoring.

Nice to Have

  • Production or petroleum engineering background, so you know why a flag matters to a pumper or a foreman.
  • Experience with SCADA historians.
  • ETL and pipeline tooling.
  • Time-series forecasting or anomaly detection experience, useful as the platform moves toward prediction.
